As you move around Upper Plenty it is impossible to miss the green tree guards that are popping up around the area. Given that there have been close to 2,000 trees planted in the last twelve months it is no wonder.
To ensure the trees are protected from wildlife or deer as they establish themselves it is imperative that we have tree guards and stakes and at around $2 per set it adds up. Behind the scenes making all of this poossible was a grant from Inland Rail for $4000.
So with the grant from Inland Rail, plants purchased by locals from the Tree Project, funds from Fifteen Trees, support from Landcare Victoria, FRRR, Merri Creek Management Commitee and corporate groups from ANZ, BUPA, NAB and Energy Australia lending a hand on planting days together with our dedicated Landcare members we are making a difference.
The plants that we plant are all indigenous to the area. We are looking to work on harvesting seeds from local plants and in October we will run a propagation workshop run by our local propagation guru and landcare member, Kate Toogood.
All of the activity creates opportunities for our community to come together and we hope that the impact will persists for future generations.
